Republicans began to take roots in the south, which used to be democratic. This made southern democrats very upset, whites that switched to republican were called scalawags. Carpetbaggers were people to come to the south to exploit the region. Only mississippi elected a black senator, and 14 black congressmen were elected to the house from the south. This showed that blacks in power was not a widespread as southern decorates lead people to believe. This leads to people forming white supremacy groups like the ku klux klan. Kkk was organized at first as a social club like a fraternity. Only a little while later they formed into the terror group we know them as today. The kkk was not a highly organized or centralized group, they were famous and successful due to their unorganizedness. Republicans, white or black, and they killed a lot of them too.
