Parliament oath to defend the king"s person at the same time they are raising armies to fight the king. King"s goal was to rescue his parliament from being in the clutches of a clique of traitors. Niether side would acknowledge the truth that they were enemies prepared to fight to the death. In general, the more urban areas tended to be more strongly parliamentarian than royalist. The more rural areas tended to support the king: wales was the most royalist. South and east was more parliamentarian than the north and west. Parliament was blessed by the wealthiest and most advanced parts of the country: london was the heart of their support. Frequently required to events forms of adminstration: enabled parliament to react quickly and adopt methods which could be more effective. 2/3s of the nobles are royalists: considerable wealth and social power, much of their money funded the war effort.
