Document Summary

Lecture 5 (slides 9; 12-17; 21-38; 40-44; 47-50; 53-55) Delta: where river enters body of water & deposits large coarse particles. Delta plain: sand & silt deposited horizontally above sea-level & forces it to branch to small distributary channels (surrounded by their own natural levees & swamps) Delta front: steep slope seaward from the plain (mainly sand/silt & contains plant debris from the land) Lower delta front: in deeper water undisturbed by waves. Prodelta: most seaward part @ a low angle (mainly clay because it is finer so it goes farther before settling into essentially flat beds here) Deltaic progradation: new sediment added to delta over time as it advances seaward (results in coarsening upward succession vs. the finer upward succession in meandering rivers) Mississippi river delta: river-dominated (delta construction from river sediment has prevailed over the sea waves) (contains both distributary channels and progradation) (oil & gas found here)
