Document Summary

Classical conditioning: russian physiologist ivan pavlov who accidentally demonstrated classical conditioning. He was actually studying digestion: his work became seminal for later behaviorists like john watson and b. f. During conditioning: tone (ns) and food (us) are paired resulting in salivation (ur), after repeated pairing, ns becomes conditioned stimulus (now cs) and elicits salivation (now conditioned response, cr) Can you unlearn: extinction = when a us (food) does not follow a cs (tone), Cr (salivation) starts to decrease and at some point completely diminishes. The original pairing will always be in our memory; will not go anywhere. Spontaneous recovery: after a rest period an extinguished cr (salivation) spontaneously recovers (briefly reappears), will b weakened and brief if not paired with cs. If cs persists alone the cr becomes extinct again. Watson"s famous little albert experiment: http://www. youtube. com/watch?v=xt0ucxorpqe, how is this an example of stimulus generalization, was not just afraid of the rat now but all furry things.
