Provide well-defined, or shared expectations about how particular people are supposed to behave: advantages. Loss of personal identity: e. g. zimbardo"s prison study. Acting inconsistently with social roles may have severe consequences e. g. "female" role in patriarchal societies. Can interfere with task performance e. g. group think. Social facilitation: by the mere presence of others, dominant responses are strengthen whether correct or incorrect, occurs when individual efforts can be evaluated. Social loafing: tendency for people to exert less effort when they pool their efforts toward a common goal, occurs when an individual efforts can not be evaluated.
