Document Summary

Chapter 8 sleep: behavioral and physiological rhythmic events that we engage in everyday, these rhythms are considered biological if they exist with out any given que. We have 90 minute attention cycles: circadian circa (around) + die one period/day, sleep, ex. So people have looked at locomotion as a measurement of circadian rhythmicity independent of sleep. A measurment of locomotion that is used is wheel running (running wheel). They were used to look at the number of revolutions a rodent would engage in over a period of time. Rats would wake up a few minutes before the lights went off. In order for it to be considered a biorhythym it has to persist in the absince of any time given cue. So animals can use resources around them in their niches: free running rhythm, in the absence of zeitgebers (constant light) sleep and body temperature also free-run.
