There were three sects born from the torah: the pharisees, the saducees, and the essenes. The pharisees were a religious sect who ate together. They follow oral and written law of the torah. They were very clean and stayed clean by washing their hands before they ate, bathed after going to the market and avoided ritual roman taxation. 1) the soul doesn t survive death, 2) humans are not compelled by fate but have fee will to choose good or evil, and 3) no regulation outside of the torah is binding. They were against the oral traditions of the jews. Not very many of these people as the pharisees had everyone on their side. When they ruled they had to have a pharisee rule the masses because they would not tolerate them. The essenes had officers oversee the communities that they varied in.
