Document Summary
Mixed feelings about father, he was stern/intimidating, derogatory statements about her looks and intelligence (thought women were source of evil in the world) horney developed negative attitude toward religion and wary of authority figures. Wanted to be a physician, dad opposed it and mother supported it. Bad marriage, had lots of affairs, sexual promiscuity fueled search for psychology insight. Her father was a god-fearing fundamentalist who believed women were inferior to men. Her mother was proud, intelligent, and free thinking. Children are completely dependent on the parents (but this does not create neurosis) two basic needs in childhood: safety and satisfaction. Satisfaction= need for food, water, and sleep (physiological) Safety: security and freedom from fear, more important than satisfaction for personality development. Neurosis happens when the parents demonstrate indifference, hostility, or hatred toward the child (which frustrates their need for safety) Parent demonstrates genuine affection and warmth toward the child, this satisfies need for safety.
