PSYC 338 Chapter 6: Erikson ch 6 notes
Document Summary
Satisfy the need of the id: ego operates in the service in the id for freud. This conception emphasizes the influence of the ego on healthy growth and adjustment and also as the source of the person"s self-awareness and identity. Erikson believed releasing contents of the unconscious does more harm than good. Erikson stressed strengthening the ego so it can overcome crisis. Erikson didn"t know who the identity of his father was: he was adopted by his step dad. His mom then met someone and they told erikson that this person (thomas homburger) was erikson"s real father: he had a sense that he didn"t belong to a family. He had an identity crisis: he also didn"t know what last name he wanted. There is a proper rate and sequence to development (sequence is the same but the timing may vary with different cultures and individuals) Culture can aggravate, playdown, intensify, prolong, smooth out transitions from one stage to the next.
