Universal social institution that is central to social life to live together and have kids. Monogamy- marriage between 1 wife and 1 husband. Can now involve 2 wives or 2 husbands (gay marriages) Endogamy- marriage to someone with similar traits (race, ethnicity, religion, Exogamy- marriage to someone with traits different from you. Intimacy- personal relationship that is built over time. Intimate relationship- partners who have a close, personal, domestic relationship. Can be intimate without sharing all thoughts. Women more emotional so they share first to help males share too. Passionate love- sudden onset, strong sexual feelings, includes idealization of the one who is loved. Companionate love- develops gradually, based on rational assessments. 2 changes: decline of marriage and changes in family household.
