Long-term development in thinking and memory processes. Adult"s in society foster cognitive development by engaging them in challenging activities. Through informal and formal conversion adults convey the way their culture interprets and responds to the world. Shows the meanings they attach to objects, events and experiences. Thought and language become increasingly independent during the first few years of life. Complex mental processes begin as social activities. Children can perform more challenging tasks when assisted by more competent individuals. Must assess capabilities alone and with help from the other individual. Zpd range of tasks a child can perform with the help of others but not yet independently. Play allows children to stretch themselves cognitively. Preintellectual speech: begins with the infant"s cry, soon the infant begins babbling and laughing. Autonomous speech: allow for infant to communicate with adults, eventually their made up word for the object, becomes the actual word.
