Document Summary

South africa was at the center of race relations during this time period. Many religions were at war with one another. Racism and religions were natural, but also political constructs used during the struggle for power. Many states were ruled by military officers who controlled the armed forces. From africa to latin america, the military formed the backbone of society. By the mid 19th century race began to mean distinct types of human beings, differentiated by skin pigment, head shape, etc . Race policies had been justified on the basis of science(versions of darwinism) Unesco released a statement in july 1950 that race was not so much a biological phenomenon as a social myth . Racism entered the vocabulary during this decade and its connotations couldn"t be separated from nazi germany. Only in the 1960"s did it become common knowledge that nazi germany implemented a system to exterminate the jewish population.
