Journalism is for building a sense of community that the govt could not control. The primary purpose of journalism is to provide ciizens with the informaion they need to be free and governing: also helps create a common language/knowledge rooted in reality. Ideniies a community, goals/heroes/villains: with new tech, govt has more tools to subvert the press by adding its own content and people willing to accept money the awareness insinct- people crave the news out of basic insinct. People need to be aware of events beyond their direct experience. Knowledge of the unknown gives them security journalism began to emerge in 17th century. In america it grew out of pubs and convos. 18th century- formulate theory of free speech john peter zenger- went on trial for criicizing the royal governor of ny. Walter lipmann- there was a growing fear that police were employing new tech and new science of propaganda to control will.
