Socialization: the process by which people acquire a social identity and learn about the groups to which they belong and do not belong. In-group: a group to which a person belongs, identifies, admires, and/or feels loyalty. Out-group: any group to which a person does not belong. Core concept 1: in-group and out-group dynamics shape our sense of self and understanding of (cid:449)ho should (cid:271)e (cid:272)ou(cid:374)ted as a(cid:373)o(cid:374)g (cid:862)us(cid:863) or (cid:862)the(cid:373). (cid:863) Amorphous means that the group is so large that any one member cannot possibly know all people who consider themselves part of the in-group. Core concept 2: in the broadest sense of the word, socialization is the process by which people develop a sense of self and learn the ways of the society in which they live. Internalization: the process in which people take as their own and accept as binding the norms, values, beliefs, and language that their socializers are attempting to pass on.
