As these accounts of the war of unification show, the heian period saw the unification of two major regions: the northern and southern chinese, the ch sh , and the northern. However, the heian period was also a period of great economic and political innovation and a period of great internal turmoil in the han dynasty. This turmoil culminated in a period of political, cultural and military instability that was ultimately resolved by the defeat of the tang forces in the battle of taihe in ad 681. This victory marked the end of a long period of stagnation in chinese history, but the ensuing centuries of political and economic instability followed. The first and largest of the han dynasties was that of the northern wei.
