Research methods are guidelines to how to conduct research when trying to understand the relationship between two things by collecting information through a study: quantitative methods. Want to collect information that is easily converted to a number: qualitative methods. Deductive approach (starts big and goes smaller: starts with theory, formulates hypothesis, does research and makes observations, analyzes date to affirm, reject, or change theory. Inductive approach: begins with information and observations, creates theory, then conducts research to see if theory holds true. Causality: (cid:862)cause a(cid:374)d effe(cid:272)t(cid:863, one thing happens to cause something else to happen. Sociologists are always trying to answer questions and find causes which creates more questions. Correlation: has to be found in order to explain the cause. Is dependent on something else: wants to know if it is going to change.
