The u. s. government has enacted policies that have both promoted and prohibited racism, sexism, ethnocentrism, homophobia, and classism. Some policies have been more effective in bringing about change than others. Addressing racial discrimination: abolition of slavery, 13th amendment, civil rights act of 1964, voting rights act of 1965, affirmative action, however, jim crow laws were legally sanctioned forms of racial oppression and discrimination.
