Document Summary

Professional values and ethics should guide all professional behavior. Professional and personal lives sometimes overlap: you must still act in a responsible manner, being charged with a crime in your personal life, for example, may hinder your professional life. Some people may treat you differently after they discover that you"re a practitioner: assure them that you leave that part of you at your job. The role of the helping professional is not as clearly defined as the roles of other professionals because: situations vary so much, training is not standardized among the various helping professionals, the clientele is so diverse. The role of the practitioner is often situation dependent. Maintaining a professional role means different things with different clients. Professional roles are different based on level of training or education. Mediator: provides an impartial forum for disputing parties (individuals, groups, communities, and organizations) to discuss areas of disagreement or misunderstanding and hopefully reach an acceptable resolution.
