PSY30400 Chapter 12: Chapter 12 Part 5
Chapter 12: Problem Solving
Section 12.2:
• Technique of using an analogy to solve a problem = analogical problem solving
o Need to determine how people can transfer their experience from solving one
problem to solving another similar problem
▪ Analogical Transfer:
• how this transfer of knowledge occurs
• Includes the target problem and the source problem, which is the
problem that shares some similarities to the target problem and
that illustrated the way of solving the target
o Radiation Problem:
▪ has been widely used in research of analogical problem solving
▪ Poses the problem of a tumor that must be removed and it will remove
the tumor but could also kill healthy skin as well
• asks the question what type of procedure might be used to
destroy the tumor and at the same time avoid destroying the
healthy tissue?
▪ Solution bombard the tumor with a number of low-intensity rays from
different directions, which will destroy the tumor without damaging the
tissue the rays are passing through
• Most people do not come up with this solution
