COMM 630 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Athetoid Cerebral Palsy, Hypernasal Speech, Dysarthria
Document Summary
Developmental dysarthrias are a group of speech disorders caused by disfunction of the immature nervous system that delays speech onset and imapairs: strength, speed, accuracy, coordination, endurance, all of these affected are muscle groups used to. Typically children don"t grow out or are cured of these neuromuscular abnormalities. Outcomes: range from little/no functional speech. Complete lack of speech due to severe motor impairment. Speech that has minimal disortions in articulations, resonance, or voice. Abnormalities: muscle tone, strength, steadiness, endurance. 3 years of age: distinguish developmental from later acquired childhood dysarthrias. Some conditions and syndromes associated with childhood dysarthrias are developmental by nature with no adult equivalent: (ex: cerebral palsy, neural migration disorders, seizure-related disorders and progressive disorders w/ childhood onset) Impairments can occur at 1 or more location in the nervous system. Either hemisphere has the potential to promote speech functions in childhood.
