Mania: an abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable mood for a duration of at least one week: manic episode: appetite, self esteem, thought content, speech, attention, motor activity - high. [moving from one thing to the next], risky behavior [promiscuous, dangerous: thought content: psychosis during manic epsiode including voice, delusions, hallucinations is not uncommon, hypomanic episode: same symptoms, less severe; able to function. Bipolar i: fluctuation between major depression and full manic episode; manic-depressive. Unable to function in either phase of illness. Usually a small dip if you look at stable mood as a line with mania being above and mdd is below the line. These are the mood fluctuations the patient goes through.
