Oxytocin: hormone released by the pituitary gland that causes labor to begin. Generally, the birthing process is divided into 3 stages: stage 1: labor. Cervix dilates, and muscles of the uterus contract to push the fetus into the vagina toward the cervix, which opens to 10cm. Average time in labor is 12 hours: stage 2/3: delivery and expelling the placenta and umbilical cord. Push the baby through the birth canal. Crowning: when the baby"s head appears at the outer opening of the vagina. Episiotomy: incision to make the vaginal opening larger during birth: purpose is to make mother"s vagina less likely to tear. Contractions occur after baby is out for placenta and umbilical cord; the whole placenta must come out. Obstetrics: eld of medicine that focuses on prenatal care and birth. Epidural: injection of an anesthetic drug into the spinal uid to help manage pain.
