The trial is a much bigger deal than anyone anticipated. Women seem to favor dmitri (love triangle is enticing) and the men want to see him punished. Dmitri pleads his innocence when the judge asks him how he will plead. Not too enthused with the jury, which is made up mostly of peasants. Mitya looks dandy in a brand new frock-coat. Mitya first learns of smerdyakov"s death and exclaims: "he was a dog and died like a dog!" Doesn"t do him much good with the jury.
