LWSOC-UA 1 Chapter Notes - Chapter 12: Social Movement Organization
Document Summary
Two approaches for analyzing the politics of social movement law reform. Politics v53. 0335; law & society minor v62. 0001: behavioral / rational actor model. Emphasis is placed on the characteristics and capabilities of the social movement/ organization. In particular, internal resources are treated as the primary determinant of successful law reform, in addition to the ability of a movement to avoid bureaucratic discretion (joel handler). The movements/ organizations organized to provide members with material incentives, who are small in size (mancur olsen), and able to be repeat players (marc galanter) are more capable of successful law reform than large, one-shot movements organized around. Similar to the behaviors jurisprudence , what is law@ in this framework is treated as an instrument or means for maximizing (i. e. , strategic decision making) the preferences or goals of a social movement (i. e. , law reform).
