Due to the spread of digital music, music became available for free on the internet. Napster - one of the first sites for downloading mp3 files for free, eventually forced to shut down because of a lawsuit with music industry personnel that forced it to shut down its main server. As a result, users built multi-server systems to distribute music, and piracy took off. Cd sales plummeted in the early 2000"s. Music industry needs to reassess how to get music to consumers. Market value of digital music increased exponentially. Platforms of sale of digital music: itunes and amazon mp3. Platforms of streaming digital music: spotify, deezer, rdio, apple music. Spotify is unique for the way it works with music rights holders to make sure its music libraries are legal. Daniel ek and martin lorentzon founded spotify. Wanted to give users access to a library of music online. Wanted to remove any delays in streaming and make the site really accessible.
