Document Summary

The chemical basis of life: atoms, molecules, and water. Matter: anything that contains mass and takes up space: solids, liquids, or gasses. Element: specific type of atom: contains protons, neutrons, and electrons. Protons and neutrons are found in atomic nucleus (center of the atom) Orbital: physical region of space where an electron maybe be found: can contain maximum of two electrons. If more electrons, more orbitals: s orbital is spherical, p orbital is dumbbell shaped. Electron shell: where an orbital is found: numbered, 1 being closest to nucleus, can contain 1 or more orbitals, innermost shell only has room for two electrons. Next shell can have up to 8 electrons: shell closest to nucleus has lowest energy electrons, electrons will fill the orbital with the lowest energy first. Atomic mass: number of protons and neutrons added together: ex: carbon has 6 protons and 6 electrons, so it has a mass of 12, measured in units called daltons.
