Ch 28 - musical conversations: haydn and classical chamber music. Theme - a musical idea that is used as a building block in the construction of a composition. Varying a theme"s melodic outline, rhythm, or harmony. A theme can be divided into its motives - its smallest melodic/rhythmic unit. Sequence - repeated at a higher or lower level. Mozart and beethoven both would improvise during their performances, however. Classical music still depended heavily on form and structure. In absolute music there is no set story or text to hold the music together, so form is important. Multimovement cycle - most instrumental works of the classical era follow this cycle. Minuet and trio // scherzo (joke) and trio. Theme and variations -- are the ruling principle of music. Any musical development may be developed in the variation process. Chamber music -- music for a small ensemble, 2-10 players.
