Chapter 16: regression: simple linear regression, statistical tool that lets us predict a person"s score on the dependent variable from his/her score on one independent variable, prediction versus relation. Allows us to calculate the equation for a straight line that describes the data. Can look at any point on x-axis and find corresponding point on y- axis: regression with z scores. Hat above y refers to fact that this variable is predicted. Tendency of scores that are particularly high or low to drift toward the mean over time. Multiply the z score by the correlation coefficient. Convert z score to a raw score: determining the regression equation. Predicted value for y when x is equal to 0, which is the point at which the line crosses, or intercepts, the y-axis. The amount that y is predicted to increase for an increase of 1 in x. Find the z score for an x of 0.
