Document Summary

Motivation - represents the processes that account for a person"s intensity, direction, and persistence of effort toward obtaining a goal. Intensity - how hard a person tries. Direction - channel effort to benefit the organization. How long a person can maintain effort. Level of motivation varies both between individuals and within individuals at different times. Proposes that people are motivated by five levels of needs. Needs are key personal factors that influence employee motivations. When one need is met, the next emerges. Social: affection, belongingness, acceptance, status, recognition, attention. Self-actualization: drive to become what we are capable of; growth; self- fulfillment. Must understand each employee"s needs; design goals to satisfy people"s unmet needs. Pros - it"s logical, simple, and intuitive. Cons - there"s little research evidence that validates this. What makes an employee satisfied isn"t the same as what makes them dissatisfied.
