New ways and methods - machiavelli is going in a radically different direction than his predecessors (aristotle, plato) Challenging the past beliefs (esp. the ones from aristotle & what he has to say about human nature) For aristotle, happiness is an activity of the rational part of the soul that is in accordance with virtue. Sparta - machiavelli discussed it bc their gov. lasted 800 years says the reason why it lasted so long is also the cause of its downfall had 2 kings presumably descended from hercules. Ephors - had power to circumscribe one of the authority of the king if one of the kings exceeded their authority. Machiavelli points out that sparta was not a city with a fortress - instead you see a bunch of little huts - it looks like a poor city.
