PSYC 005 Chapter Notes - Chapter 6: Confounding, Internal Validity, Robert Cialdini
Document Summary
There was a social psychologist during the 1960s that came up with the idea of a counterintuitive hypothesis. This is when there are a lot of witnesses at the crime or accident then it is unlikely that they would help the victim. Diffusion of responsibility is known as a process where witness feels less responsibility when helping the witness. An example is that there was a person name kitty genoverse that was killed and there were several witnesses that didn"t help. It can be hard to know if there were lesser witnesses, then they would have helped. Darley and letane created a hypothesis that is similar to the situation by simulating an emergency situation in a laboratory. There was college students that participated in a discussion about college life with other students via intercom system. In the intercom system, a student had epileptic seizure asking for help. They wanted to see if the students in the discussions would help them.
