British broke german secret codes right at the start of the war. Scare tactic to threaten british food supply. Met with british navy, not fishing boats. Goes very poorly for germany lose the sms bl cher. Battle of jutland, 31 may 1 june 1916. Goal to release the german fleet into the high seas escape from the blockade all or nothing. Battle cruisers supposed to find the german fleet and lure them to the grand fleet. Communication failure causes beatty to engage instead of fleeing as he was supposed to do. He was unable to get a response from the grand fleet. First battle cruiser is sunk almost immediately by a direct hit on their turret loaded with ammunition.
