Document Summary

Delinquent act crime done by a juvenile. Parents may not be able to take care of their kids anymore. Juvenile probation officers tend to have parenting roles. Heavy handed secret court decision = opposite of due process. First case to acknowledge kids need due process. Kids do not have the right to a jury, because juvenile proceedings are not open to the public. No proof a jury can make a better decision than a judge. Cannot charge a kid for a crime in both juvenile and adult courts. Pick the court that would be in the best interest of the kid. Kids brains aren"t developed, so they cannot be sentenced to death or life in prison. Waiver transfer of case to adult court. Judge looks at entire situation of the case and sees there"s something else going on. Kid might need to go into foster care, rehab, etc.
