PHYS 211 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Mechanical Equilibrium, Net Force, Dynamic Equilibrium
Document Summary
An external net force is needed to make an object accelerate change its velocity. Without forces acing on it, an object would travel forever at a constant speed. Natural state of objects = uniform moion (constant velocity) If an object is at rest, it has a tendency to stay at rest. If it is moving, it has a tendency to coninue moving with the same velocity. Mechanical equilibrium = no net force: staic equilibrium = object is at rest, dynamic equilibrium = object is moving in a straight line with constant velocity. Force = what causes an object to change its velocity. Consider the object"s frame of reference only net forces can determine the object"s moion. Purpose of the irst law idenify force as something that disturbs a state of equilibrium. Second law describes how forces respond the these forces. Inerial reference frames = a reference frame in which newton"s laws are valid.
