Prosody: part of language that determines how we say what we say. Written word is a shorthand code for representing language. Aside from punctuation, it doesn"t have prosody. Rhythmic and temporal structure = conveyed mostly by hands. Each has its own phetic and phonological properties. Mora > syllable > prosodic word > phonological phrase > intonational phrase > phonological utterance. Boundaries of constituents may be marked by timing cues, such as pauses, and boundary tones. Prosodic constituents are related to syntactic ones but aren"t always coeztensive with them. Characterized by a single movement or more than one tupe of movement occurring simultaneously. Salient breaks to delineate certain syntacctically coherent elements. Whole body participates in phonetic realization of sl prosody. Domain of the most salient pitch excursions of spoken language intonation. Fulfills many pragmatic functions as socal intonation. Can be dissociated from syntactic properties of text.
