2011 federal justice dept said arpaio harassed, intimidates, and terrorized latinos and immigrants. Immigrants fuel the local economy with their labor. A contradiction between welcoming foreign workers and demonizing their languages and cultures. 23 million immigrants came to the us in the last 2 decades of 19th century and first 2 of 20th. Half of the peasant-origin groups went back home at some point. More than 90% of eastern european jews never returned home. 1910: immigrants accounted for 14. 7% of the american population. From independent craftsmen and journeymen to unskilled workers. Locals felt like outsiders in their own lands. Foreigners dilute moral fiber of us and integrity of its institutions. Immigration as an obstacle of local"s upward mobility. California gold rush 1848-1855 need for an immigrant labor force. Many immigrants assimilated to english language, but didn"t give up their religions. Protestant nation had to accomodate catholic faith, etc.
