CE 49800 Chapter Notes - Chapter 22-23: Cost Overrun, Direct Labor Cost, Riprap
Document Summary
Using length to represent work effort is suitable when the cross section is relatively uniform along the limits of the work. Using area to represent work effort is suitable when the thickness or depth is uniform within the limits of the work. When the geometry of work is such that length and area are not suitable to represent the work effort, such as in excavation and backfill, then it is best to use volume as a unit of measurement. Theoretically, volume and weight can be used interchangeably if the unit weight is known. In cases in which material or product is transported by trucks, the weight is more readily available because the trucks are weighed. Occasionally, construction work effort cannot be represented easily by length, area, volume, or weight. Examples of other units include per each, hour and day. Length or distance can be measured from the drawings with an engineer scale, or a map measuring device.
