PHIL 316 Chapter Notes - Chapter On Liberty, Ch. 4: On Liberty
Document Summary
The part of individuality that only concerns the individual should belong to the individual, and the part that concerns society should belong to society. Everyone who receives the protection of society owes a return for the benefit. When we harm people by violating their rights. When we fail to do our share of the collective burden. In mill"s opinion, other"s should not concern themselves with the actions of others if the only one being harmed is the person committing the action themselves. The only time that societal intervention is acceptable is if the actions cause a direct negative affect to society itself / threatens societal wellbeing. While in this case society should not intervene, individuals still hold the right to hold judgement against this person for committing actions in which self-harm is inflicted. Mill"s concludes that if a person harms themselves and nobody else, then it is of no importance to society.
