Goffman: the presentation of self in everyday life. We are constantly trying to control how others view us while trying to form and obtain info about others. Expressions we give off the cues others view as symptomatic of person. Dramaturgical analysis looking at how we perform in the social world. Weber"s contribution: actions are a person"s basic unit. Socialization and socialization reproduction takes place by doing things similarly over time and across individuals. Expressions we give v. expressions we give off. We give off: cues others view as symptomatic of person. The assumption here is that we are in control of some things but not others. Sees the world as a stage and social action as performance. We are attuned to what others think of us and so we are try to influence how we are perceived by: Trying to control the conduct of others and their responsive treatment. Trying to persuade others of your definition of things.
