11:375:101 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Carrying Capacity, Ecological Succession, Interspecific Competition
Document Summary
Chapter 5: species interactions, ecological succession, and population control. Resource partitioning - occurs when different species competing for similar scarce resources evolve specialized traits that allow them to share the same resources. Predation - a member of one species that feeds directly on all or part of a member of another species called the prey. Parasitism - occurs when one species lives in or on another organism known as the host. Mutualism - two species interact in ways that benefit both by providing food, shelter, or some other resource. Commensalism - an interaction that benefits one species but has little if any beneficial or harmful effect on the other. Ecological succession - the normally gradual change in species composition in a given terrestrial area or aquatic system. Primary ecological succession - involves the gradual establishment of communities of different species in lifeless areas.
