Document Summary
The last frontier: from bumps to brain scans: * neuroscience: the study of the brain and the nervous system. * phrenology: a discredited area of brain science involving the study of the topology of the head. * neurons: nerve cells that communicate with chemical and electrical signals. There are many parts that make up the neuron: * cell body: contains the standard components of the body"s cells, such as the dna and sources of nourishment. * dendrites: tiny branch like fibers that protrude from one end of the cell body. * axons: long skinny tube like structures that are on the opposite end of the dendrites. They are surrounded by a myelin sheath(a fatty substance that provides insulation for the activities occurring within the axon). * synapse: a synapse is a tiny gap between the end of an axon(the terminal bud) on one neuron and the beginning of a dendrite of another.
