Document Summary

Classical conditioning: a type of learning in which a neutral stimulus becomes associated (paired) with a stimulus that causes a reflexive behavior. Neutral stimulus: a stimulus that has not previously been associated with the stimulus and that does not elicit the reflexive behavior itself. Ivan pavlov (1849-1936): a russian psychologist who was the first person to investigate systematically the variables associated with classical conditioning. As part of his research on digestive processes, pavlov studied salivation in dogs. To measure the amount of saliva that dogs produce when given meat powder (food). Pavlov and his colleagues noticed that his dogs began to salivate even before they were fed. Pavlov decided to tone a chime before he served the dogs food. Unconditioned stimulus (us): a stimulus that elicits an automatic response that does not depend on prior learning. Unconditioned response (ur): the reflexive or automatic response elicited by an unconditioned stimulus.
