Document Summary

Encoding: the process of organizing and transforming incoming information so that it can be entered into memory, either to be stored or to be compared with previously stored information. Storage: the process of retaining information in memory. Retrieval: the process of accessing information stored in memory. Memory store: a set of neurons that serves to retain information over time. Sensory memory(sm): holds a large amount of perceptual information for a very brief time, typically less than 1 second. Sensory memory occurs without effort, arising simply because a stimulus activates perceptual areas of your brain. George sperling (1960) experiment which involved displaying letters and numbers for a fraction of a second followed by a tone. Those who associated the tone with the line could recall the line perfectly, whereas those who heard no tone had more difficulty memorizing the lines. We have a sensory memory store for each of our senses, not just for vision.
