Stress- an unpleasant state of arousal that arises when we perceive the demand of an event threatens our ability to handle that event. Appraisal- the process by which people make judgements about the demands of potentially stressful events and their ability to meet those demands. Coping is an effort to reduce stress. Ptsd- a person experiences enduring physical and physiological symptoms after an extremely stressful situation. Change may stress by forcing us to adapt. Positive stressors are not as harmful as negative stressors. Micro stressors- daily hassles that irritate us. Place constant strain and contributes more to illness than major life events. Minority stress theory- describes chronically high levels of stress faced by members of stigmatized minority groups. Type a behavior- characterized by extremes of competitive striving achievement, a sense of urgency, hostility, and aggression. Stress and immune system: negative emotional states, unhealthy behaviors, stress hormones, weakened immune system, illness.
