Document Summary

When we look at juvenile delinquent culture (not all) then we notice it is non- utilitarian, medicious, and negativistic. Stealing is a means to an end, so the object is utilitarian bc the object that is being stolen holds some sort of value. Gang stealing goes against this idea, bc they aren"t motivated by this. Usually steal things just for the sake of it to show power and prowess. There"s delight in doing things that you aren"t supposed to do. Hold gratuitous hostility towards those that aren"t part of a gang. Areas of high mobility are lacking in cultural unity. The diverse ethnicities and backgrounds come with diverse values and codes that it becomes inconsistent. If one is delinquent, it is bc of the absence of constraint. Holds delinquent behavior to interstitial areas of cities. Formerly good neighborhoods that have been taken over by immigrants, industry, and commerce and is economically depressed.
