COMM 321 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Everyday Health, Health Communication, Health Promotion
Document Summary
Drug overdoses are the leading injury related death. This can be prevented with medical assistance but witnesses are also intoxicated and leave. Good samaritan policies give limited immunity from arrest from minor drug and alcohol violations. Good samaritan laws and increased calls give a national response that prioritizes medical over legal consequences. Health communication: symbolic processes by which people, individually and collectively, understand, shape, and accommodate to health and illness. Account for personal, cultural, and political complexities. Health communication: inherently applied, interdisciplinary field of inquiry which can inform healthcare delivery and promotion. Works with professionals in other fields (sociology, etc) to translate important insights into beneficial practices. Wounded storytellers= lives disrupted with illness and bear witness. Thinking with stories allows people to imaginatively attend to others. Home: site in which health practices are negotiated and maintained, relationships are enacted and effects of cultural and community are strongly felt.
