2 ways of understanding religion: theology involves an open participation of all highly committed scholars, who must provide internally consistent and criticizable hypotheses--not based on their privileged belief--that could address many types of explanatory questions. Textual criticism involves determining if a particular religious text is the original, edited, or revised version. Documentary criticism establishes what the purpose of the document is and whether the religious text is a complete set or if it"s a composite work. However, sometimes you run into the possibility of misinterpreting the religious concepts compared to that of a long-time follower: the outsider must possess the ability to think objectively and show some sort of commitment to the experiential. An example of reported religion would be when muslims are generalized to believed a certain thing, but because there are different branches of islam, it could differ greatly.
