ENGL 231 Chapter : Week 12 GE Round 2

Document Summary

After reading the lecture notes and my classmates responses i have a much better understanding of the final volume of great expectations. I learned that the novel actually had two different endings: the published one with pip and estella ending up together and then the unpublished one. In the original ending, pip and estella achieved reconciliation with one another but lead separate lives. Although the original ending is not as happy as the one that was published, i believe it is much more realistic. Dickens chose to portray a more mature sign of love in that they now understand each other better because their suffering enlightened them. Though they did not have each other, all of their suffering had not been in vain because it enabled them to be more understanding and compassionate people.
