ENGL 231 Chapter : Week 4 KL Round 1
Document Summary
Several things happened in acts 3,4, and 5 so in this response i will briefly cover two prevalent themes i noticed throughout the play. I believe blindness is an appropriate, and somewhat ironic, condition for gloucester because he was completely blind" (literally and metaphorically) when it came to telling the difference between his "good" son and his bad son. Gloucester could not see that edmund was manipulating him into believing edgar wants him dead and he also didn"t even recognize edgar, when he was disguised as "poor tom" the beggar. I think when gloucester"s eyeballs are plucked out, this makes his literal blindness symbolic of his inability to "see" the truth about his children. This is also ties in with lear"s inability to see which of his daughters are true to him. I was surprised when edgar disguised himself as "poor tom," a naked beggar.
