Adaptation: gradual process where organisms adjust to the conditions of where they live. New physical/anatomical features help survival = process of natural selection. Cultural adaptation: complex of ideas, technologies, and activities that help them survive and thrive. Ex: we can invent and build, manipulating environments. People look at the environment in many different ways. Also ideas, beliefs, biological traits, behavior, attitudes, etc. Ex: water and pollution from industrial practices, obesity epidemic from fast foods, some forms of tech reducing people"s physical activity. What"s adaptive in one setting may be maladaptive in another. Successful cultures must produce collective human behavior that doesn"t destroy the environment. Modern concept of culture towards 19th century. Culture: goes deeper than observable behavior; it is a society"s shared and socially transmitted ideas, values, emotions, and perceptions that are used to make sense of experience, generate behavior, and are reflected in that behavior. Every culture is socially learned, shared, based on symbols, integrated, and dynamic.
